  • The plate is actually a beveled shield that slings any grease coming off of the pilot bearing (and maybe a leaky rear main seal)back towards the block, keeping it from fouling the disc and making your clutch slip. It is installed facing the engine block.

  • Just to add comments, usually the thick side goes into the pressure plate. Flywheel side is flat. To be 100% sure if you put the plate on the flywheel and turn it and anything hits it has to go the other way. I am not saying the others are wrong but I have put clutches in tons of times. Cars/trucks and yes tractors usually have dampner springs. The side that is raised usually will only clear in the pressure plate.
